Paracetamol

Where do I get ... ?

Paracetamol

Postby PaulS » Mon Mar 08, 2010 3:19 pm

Anyone know if it's available locally? Or if there's an equivalent?

Terry (my missus) is allergic to Aspirin and she is concerned that an American equivalent would still carry traces of Aspirin.

Right now we get one of the kids to post it from UK.

TIA :-)

ah, you mean Acetominophen ??

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paracetamol

we USians know it as Tylenol.

http://www.answers.com/topic/acetaminophen

I brought in a 500-jar from Walgreens.

my husband is allergic to it, so I still have PLENTY, if Terry wants some...

um, there's also "Mexican Asprin" widely available here in Belize.

it works well, IF not taken frequently... bad side effects,so it's been banned in the US:

Metamizole, or dipyrone, is a fever and pain reliever sometimes called "Mexican aspirin." It was removed from the U.S. market in 1979 by the Food and Drug Administration but is available without a prescription in Mexico, other Latin American countries, parts of Asia and Africa.

"It's a very effective pain reliever and fever reducer. Parents invariably tell us it works much better than Tylenol," said Byington.

I thought Tylenol and Paracetamol were two different drugs.

I have never heard of it. I cannot find it in any of my Nursing Drug books.

I know Panadol, and Tylenol (the trade names) are Acetaminophen. Acetaminophen & phenacetin are derivatives of Paraaminophenol. So, I'm thinking Paracetamol, and Tylenol may be related, if not the same. The trade names are similar to the generic name. Though this is NOT an accurate way to figure out drugs.

Ah. Sounds like they are the same thing then. If that is the case, you can get tylenol at any of the chemists and supermarkets in San Pedro for sure.

Bravo :klap:

Sounds like he can get some freebies from MZ Z

Right night I'm doing "beer therarpy". Seems I've got a kidney stone. So, instead of sitting in an ER waiting for an IV and meds, I'm gonna stay home, have a beer, followed by 2 waters, & repeat every hour till the darn thing dislodges itself. (Oh, gots some Vicoden-ies that I'm saving for bedtime)

Since the beer is medicinal, can I still make the claim I'm alcohol free? Tomorrow would have been 1 month.

Paul, why not just pick up Tylenol from your local shop. Almost every shop here sells in in San Pedro, so I'm sure you can get it easily. Would be much more convenient and cheaper. If you Wikipedia Paracetamol, you'll see it is the same drug as Tylenol (which is just a brand name).

Hopefully this will help.

"Paracetamol was first marketed in the United States in 1953 by Sterling-Winthrop Co., which promoted it as preferable to aspirin since it was safe to take for children and people with ulcers.[16] The best known brand today for paracetamol in the United States, Tylenol, was established in 1955 when McNeil Laboratories started selling paracetamol as a pain and fever reliever for children, under the brand name Tylenol Children's Elixir—the word "tylenol" was a contraction of para-acetylaminophenol.[22] In 1956, 500 mg tablets of paracetamol went on sale in the United Kingdom under the trade name Panadol, produced by Frederick Stearns & Co, a subsidiary of Sterling Drug Inc."

'Neeter, hows the beer therapy going?

did you pass the stone yet?

I heard getting stoned helps.

:beam:  :beam:

I don't mean to make light of such a painful subject, (or object, as the case may be)

just wanted to cheer you up some.

Paul, I understand that Tylenol and aspirin are made in entirely separate facilities, so there's virtually NO chance of contamination with traces of aspirin.

but hey, the FDA did sorta go to helena handbasket under the BushCo regime, so, ya never know.

thanks Colette, I shoulda done that in the first place, pasted the relevant portions, but I was itching madly, and ran off to DEAL with it...

seems we are INFESTED with MITES here at Darwin Farm, chicken and turkey nests are being dumped, cleaned, sprayed, moved, and otherwise futzed with, in an attempt to decrease their numbers.

:sigh:

I really HATE them buggers, almost too small to see, but you can FEEL them crawling about.

oh, yuckers !!

Trust me Zelda.....YOU know, I know how to to settle dem nerves. I think a good dose of laughter helps with pain.

"NO" the beer therapy did not work, nor did the Vicoden. I do not care for the Vicoden, it leaves me with a major hangover the next day. As for the beer, I could only do 4 beers, and 4-32 oz of water. After that, I was full! It took me from 1:00 - 5:30 to get that down. Then came 1 Vicoden, and I was OUT till 1:00 the next day.

After 4 days, I went to the ER. Was not planning on narcotic therapy so I drove myself. They gave me Dilaudid for the pain. Got rid of the pain for 2 hours, but left me crappy for the rest of the day. Hubby had to come pick me up. They felt my left sided pain was not a stone, but rather my back. Though the CT Scan was essentially normal, they said, "Incidently, there IS a stone in the right kidney." So, I can anticipate that at a later date.

I felt like a big hypochondriac. I have a history of back issues, nothing like this, but I do feel I know my back pain. I have free range of motion, with no limitations, & no tenderness to my back. The pain is mostly in the left lower front, and the severity comes & goes.

So, I'll ignore it for now, see a chiropractor tomorrow, and hope for the best.

On a good note, I've lost 5 lbs through all of this
Now you know somethings wrong, if Anita's NOT eating or planning her next meal.

edit to add: So, to keep the pain down, I'm now popping Motrin & Paracetamol, & continueing "stoner thearapy". :klap: (Oh, minus the beer)
