Mother Nature Strikes

Yesterday's freak storm that brought the city of Belize to an almost grinding halt left commuters and motorists dashing for high ground. Twenty four hours later, the powerful and dazzling effects of Mother Nature have come to light. Roaring thunder shook fragile nerves and interrupted many a business moment. A lightning bolt unleashed its fury during the storm and caused this palm tree in the Lopez Mateos park on the Northside of the city to catch on fire, while at the neighborhood K-Park Grocery store located in Kings Park, a jarring hole at the front top of the building is another way in which Mother Nature again left its mark.

Rains flood Belize City

Friday, 30.07.2010, 09:12am (GMT-6) - By Albert Ciego - Staff Reporter

The inadequacy of Belize City’s drainage became obvious, and traffic slowed to a crawl when torrential rains inundated streets and the highway in the space of a few hours on Monday July 26.

Water levels rose on the Northern Highway from near the Belize Mills to in front of Travellers Liquors at Mile 2. In some areas water rose so high that vehicles with low slung suspensions stalled.

Traffic also began to back up Barrack Road, where water levels also rose to a foot, causing many vehicles to stall in the middle of the street. Owners had to push their cars out of the way to ease traffic flow.

Water levels also rose knee high on Freetown Road, Vernon Street and other principal streets of the city.

The floodwaters resulted from severe thunderstorms that affected the northern half of the country on Monday morning, July 26 and continued through the afternoon. Meterorlogists recorded two to three inches of rainfall in many parts of the country
