Bottling Magnate Barry Bowen Killed in Plane Crash

posted (February 26, 2010)

We begin this evening’s newscast with truly stunning news: bottling magnate Barry Bowen is dead. He was the pilot on his private plane that crashed on San Pedro around 5:30 this evening. Reports are that the 64 year old Bowen was flying to his home in San Pedro as he does every evening. He was along with at least three passengers – who perished. One of them was reportedly an employee at his Gallon Jug tourism enterprise. The plane crashed within range of the San Pedro Municipal Airport in a marshy area a fair distance south of the airstrip. Some reports say that Bowen missed the airstrip on his approach. At this point, no one knows what caused the crash. The plane at this time is flipped over on its back.

The name is familiar. Isn't that the name of somewhere you can buy liquor in Cayo?
Maybe not so much liquor but cases of beer. Was it "Bowen & Bowen"?
Either way, how unfortunate.

yes, that's him... of Bowen & Bowen, makers of Beliken Beer..

Bowen was the richest man in Belize (not counting Ashcroft, because he doesn't really live here fulltime)

the distributorship in Esperanza, Cayo, sells crates of Beliken and Lighthouse, 5 gallon bottled water, farmed shrimp by the case, and Beliken calendars.

we go there about once a week.... I saw Barry there once, but never met or talked to him.

US family killed in Belize plane crash

The Associated Press - Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010 |

BELIZE CITY -- Authorities in Belize have identified the victims of a small-plane crash as a family from Albany, New York, and a prominent Belizean businessman.

Police Sgt. Leslie Logan says Michael and Jill Casey and their two young children died in the accident on the island of San Pedro along with former senator and bottling magnate Sir Barry Bowen.

Logan says Bowen was piloting the single-engine aircraft as the group headed to a fundraising event he was hosting in San Pedro when the plane crashed near the town's runway Friday night.
Local media said Michael and Jill Casey taught at a school in northwestern Belize owned by Bowen.
