If The Dam Breaks Open...

If The Dam Breaks Open...

If the dam breaks open... many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forbodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

PUBLIC FORUM ON DAM BREAK WARNING SYSTEM SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND IN CAYO

December 09, 2009

Residents of the Cayo district who live downstream from the hydro electric facility operated by Belize Electric Company Limited are being invited to a public forum this weekend in San Ignacio town. According to a radio announcement which began airing today on Love FM, the purpose of Saturday’s forum is to discuss matters relating to the dam break warning system.

Organized by BECOL in collaboration with the Cayo District Emergency Management Organization, the event will feature presentations by representatives of the Meteorology Department, the Department of the Environment, Public Utilities Commission, Ministry of Health and Belize Water Services Limited. The discussion is expected to focus on the procedures for the sounding of the sirens, the sound of the sirens, the time frame for evacuations should there be an emergency, the evacuation routes and safe areas.

Organizers of the event say the public will be given the opportunity to interact with the panel in an effort to make progress in finalizing the warning system. The public forum on the Dam Break Warning System will be held on Saturday morning, starting at ten o’clock at the Cultural Centre in San Ignacio town.

Thanks for the posting this, I wouldn't have known about it otherwise.

It was interesting to hear what the expected effected areas and evacuation plan is.

There was some constructive input from the audience that will help them that needs to implement and plan. The main topic being education for the people likely to be effected in the event of the dam breaking.

Yessir... I saw your lovely wife at Market, and she told me you went.

we WANTED to, but were stuck waiting for a customer who bought the entire lot of young ducks, and said she'd be back in an hour with a cage.

alas, she never came, and we turned away half-a-dozen buyers, telling them "All sold..."

wah!

so, back on topic... I noticed NEW signs posted along the evacuation route for San Ignacio.

they point the way towards the seven hills above town, and Benque/Succotz.

what I was hoping to learn is WHERE they plan to HOUSE the San Ignacians after they evacuate ??

was that discussed ??

and how will they feed and clothe the refugees for the duration ??

and are they going to do PHONE notifications for those within reach of the flood, BUT out of earshot of the SIRENS...

like, the people in back of Santa Elena, along the river (Miss Kenni's area) and further downriver...

it's not enough (not NEARLY enough!) to just move the downtown people out of the way...
